Even Minor Car Accidents Can Result In Major Pain

Even Minor Car Accidents Can Result In Major Pain

Many of us associate car accident injuries with serious accidents and extremely damaging, but the truth is even minor fender-benders can cause injury to drivers and their passengers. Low-impact car accidents are very common and can cause injuries to the head, neck, and spine.

How Low-Impact Car Accidents Cause Injury

Vehicles are built to withstand damage, but even with modern safety measures, this does not mean they provide adequate protection against personal injury. In minor accidents, when safety mechanisms do not deploy, the entire force of the crash is transferred to the vehicle occupants. This transfer of force can cause whiplash or related injuries to the spine and neck as the body is forced rapidly in one direction and then retracts in the other direction.

Left untreated, injuries to the spine and neck can devolve into chronic conditions that cause lingering, unabated pain and discomfort, not only in the back and the neck, but elsewhere in the body too. It’s not uncommon for conditions like headaches, tingling in the extremities, and reduced range of motion to originate in the spinal column.

Chiropractic Intervention Corrects Underlying Musculoskeletal Issues

Early examination by chiropractor can correct any spinal subluxations (vertebral misalignments) that occur in a car accident. This reduces pain and discomfort and re-positions the spine to its’ optimal alignment. When the spine is properly aligned, tissue swelling and inflammation go down, muscles experience less strain and there is less stress on ligaments and joints – any one of these situations could cause lingering pain or become a chronic condition.

Chiropractic care addresses the root cause of the pain or dysfunction. The traditional medical approach is often to “wait and see” or to mask the symptoms with pain relievers. At Wellspring Health, we think the earlier we can get you feeling more like yourself, the better. There’s less risk of a minor injury becoming a chronic pain and less chance of developing a reliance on pain killers or pumping your body full of what is, at best, a short-term narcotic solution.

Whiplash? A Chiropractor Can Help With That

Whiplash? A Chiropractor Can Help With That

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries received in a car accident. Whiplash happens when the body undergoes violent, abrupt movement in one direction and then back again in the opposite direction – exactly what occurs in a car accident. The jerking stop puts extreme strain on the neck muscles and ligaments which can cause both spinal and soft tissue injuries.

Signs of Whiplash

Anytime you’ve been in a car accident or experienced trauma similar to that which occurs in a car accident, you may experience whiplash injuries. Although whiplash is not life-threatening, it definitely affects your enjoyment of life. Whiplash injuries can be relatively minor or severe.

Symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Neck pain, stiffness, and/or instability
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Should or arm pain and stiffness
  • Jaw pain
  • Visual disturbances
  • Back pain
  • Ringing in the ears

Treating Whiplash

Whiplash does not always show up in diagnostic tests, particularly if there have been soft tissue injuries. Conventional medical treatment is to have the patient wear a cervical collar, rest, and use painkillers and/or anti-inflammatories to see if the pain recedes.

Modern treatments focus more on movement and less on immobilization. Studies have shown that early interventions consisting of range of motion exercises heal tissues heal faster and prevent the loss of motion that can occur with prolonged immobilization.

Another treatment that is often highly effective is spinal or cervical manipulation. If the neck or spinal vertebrae have been pushed out of position, they could be adding to the strain on your already overtaxed muscles and ligaments. A vertebrae that is out of position might also be irritating the nerves in the spinal column and causing pain, discomfort, tingling, or weakness down the arms.

Chiropractors are best suited to manage whiplash because they are trained in the entire musculoskeletal system. At The Complete Wellness Center of Orange City, our chiropractors often perform cervical and spinal adjustments along with range of motion exercises and physical therapies to keep the muscles limber, increase blood flow, and promote healing.

Add "Visit The Chiropractor" To Your Post-Car Accident To-Do List

Add “Visit The Chiropractor” To Your Post-Car Accident To-Do List

Your mind is no doubt going a thousand miles a minute after a car accident. There are insurance companies, rental car agencies, body shops, and possibly police reports to deal with. You might even be seriously injured and have to undergo medical treatments and spend time recovering.

Even if you feel fine and walk away from the accident, it’s important to see a doctor and get a clean bill of health. Many car accident injuries are subtle and don’t leave obvious signs like broken bones or contusions. Chiropractors are particularly skilled at diagnosing these “invisible” injuries and helping you feel more like yourself.

Pain Means There’s a Problem

Lingering pain after a car accident is a sure sign that something is wrong. Unless there is an obvious sign of injury, your family physician will likely brush it off as simply “needing time” to heal and recommend painkillers and anti-inflammatories as treatment, but this approach only masks the problem and can make it difficult to determine how severe the injury really is.

Visit The Chiropractor For A Diagnosis

For an actual diagnosis of the underlying problem, schedule a visit with a chiropractor soon after a car accident. A chiropractor can pinpoint the source of the pain through x-rays and a physical exam and recommend a course of treatment before the pain or injury become worse.

One of the biggest concerns with ignoring pain or injury, beyond the immediate discomfort, is the stress and strain it can put on the musculoskeletal system. Our bodies excel at compensating for weakness or injury. A subtle shift in the way you bear weight, walk, lift things, stand, or sit may not seem like a big deal, but over time these changes can strain the musculoskeletal system and result in chronic pain or dysfunction. It’s not unusual for chiropractors to see patients who were in car accidents years ago and it wasn’t until years had passed that the injury really started to bother them. In other cases, the pain or dysfunction never really went away after the car accident, but it wasn’t considered severe enough by the patient’s doctor to warrant further investigation or treatment.

Experience Car Accident Injury Relief Without Drugs

Chiropractic treatment restores body function, positioning, and balance through manual manipulations, massage therapy, and simple exercises. These treatments relieve pressure on injured parts of the body and restore alignment, making it possible for the body to function normally and heal more fully.

If you have been in a car accident and still don’t feel like everything is quite right, contact The Complete Wellness Center of Orange City for an examination. Our chiropractors will listen to your concerns, conduct a full exam, and conduct diagnostic testing to get to the root of the pain. Then we’ll develop a treatment plan that will have you feeling better.

The What's And How's Of Spinal Decompression

The What’s And How’s Of Spinal Decompression

When patients hear the words “spinal decompression” there’s often a cringe involved. To hear that your spine is compressed and must be decompressed is worrying, but spinal decompression therapy is anything but.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression a drug-free, non-surgical stretching of the spine. It is a non-invasive, narcotic-free way to relieve pressure on compressed discs, alleviate pain, promote spinal healing, and restore spinal positioning.

The practitioners at Wellspring Health use a specialized machine and training to provide spinal decompression therapy that decreases pain, restores mobility, and improves function. Treatment usually consists of several short sessions where patients don’t have to do much more than lie on their backs, relax, and let the machine do all the work.

How Does It Work?

Through very controlled, slight, back and forth movements, injured discs are gently pulled away from one another, the released. This stretch-relax movement opens up the spinal column, creating a suction action that draws the injured disc back into position. As retraction occurs, nerves are less aggravated and self-healing occurs. Patients do not experience pain, but they may feel the stretch.

This is in contrast to surgical decompression techniques, which actually remove components of the spinal column to provide more room for the aggravated nerve roots or to remove the component that is irritating the nerve.

What Can Spinal Decompression Treat?

Spinal decompression is a very effective solution for treating low back pain, neck pain, and leg pain. It is commonly used when discs are herniated or bulging. By allowing the injured disc to return to its natural position, inflammation and irritation decrease and the body is able to heal itself.

It is not a recommended treatment option for pregnant women, anyone who has had spinal fusion or back surgery in the past, or anyone with broken vertebrae. It also generally isn’t effective or recommended for those with degenerative conditions like osteoporosis.

Are You A Candidate for Spinal Decompression Therapy?

If you are experiencing back or neck pain and other treatment options have failed, spinal decompression is worth a look. Contact The Complete Wellness Center of Orange City to arrange a consultation with one of our therapists who will be able to determine whether or not you’d be a good candidate for this type of treatment.

Is It Time For Physical Therapy?

Is It Time For Physical Therapy?

Over the years we’ve encountered a lot of people who think physical therapy is something you do only after you’ve had a serious injury or surgery, but the truth is physical therapy is something that almost anyone can benefit from. You don’t need to be recovering from surgery or overcoming a life-changing injury to seek out help from a physical therapist.

Many people with chronic pains or decreased function are finally able to find relief with physical therapy or rehabilitation services. In fact, in some cases, commitment to a physical therapy regimen is just as effective as surgical intervention for common injuries to the shoulders, hips, knees, or joints. As an added bonus, physical therapy can restore strength, flexibility, and function setting patients on a course for improved health. Limitations like weakness, instability, and loss of balance can be reversed with the right physical therapy program.

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a medical discipline that is focused on restoring the body to optimum function. Techniques focus on stretching, manual manipulation and massage, trigger point therapy, and strength training, to name just a few. The end goal is to provide patients with the tools to continue on with their program at home, which is why many programs rely on simple exercises that can be done anywhere, without the need for a gym membership.

Restore Function and Say Goodbye to Pain With Physical Therapy

If you are tired of lingering aches and pains or need some advice on how to maintain a strong and active lifestyle as you age, contact a physical therapist at Wellspring Health to arrange an evaluation. If we determine that you are a candidate for physical therapy we’ll get you set up with a treatment program that will having you feeling like your old self before you know it!

Experience Drug-Free Chronic Pain Relief at Wellspring Health

Too often, people in pain reach for the medicine cabinet, hoping to find relief with pain relievers. When that doesn’t work their next step may be to visit their family physician who will likely recommend prescription narcotics to mask the pain. In severe cases, surgery may even be recommended. Isn’t there another option?

Yes! There are non-narcotic and non-surgical treatments that can help provide acute and chronic pain management and relief. The Complete Wellness Center of Orange City offers effective treatment options that can help patients who are tired of living with chronic pain.

The Trouble With Narcotics

The opioid crisis has highlighted the dangers of overprescribing pain medications. Besides the possibility of addiction, narcotic pain relief doesn’t fix the problem, it only masks the pain. Patients experience short-term pain relief, but once the medication wears off, the pain returns. Over time, patients who come to rely on narcotics for pain relief may need higher and higher doses of the medication or need to take it more frequently to experience relief. It’s a never-ending circle.

Non-Narcotic Pain Treatments

Chiropractic care is an effective alternative for pain management. Non-narcotic and non-invasive, chiropractic care gets to the root of the problem, helping to restore natural function and positioning so the body can heal itself and remain pain-free.

A chiropractic treatment plan may involve many different things; it all depends on the type of injury and severity of the pain. A comprehensive treatment plan may include any or all of the following:

Medically Directed Weight Loss Can Provide The Results You’ve Been Missing

Have you struggled to lose weight on your own or do you need direction on how to safely lose weight and keep it off? Medically directed or medically supervised weight loss may be the answer and it’s available right here in Orange City at Wellspring Health!

What is Medically Directed Weight Loss?

Medically directed weight loss is a supervised weight loss program that uses scientific principles and research to help patients address the root cause of their weight problems. It does not involve diet pills or surgery, but instead focuses on good nutrition and healthy habits like exercise, diet, and lifestyle to achieve weight loss goals.

Each plan is customized to the individual patient’s needs, taking into account their age and any medical conditions or injuries they may have. Each program is overseen by a licensed healthcare professional or a team of medical professionals. This team is there to make sure the weight loss proceeds in a safe manner and to provide the support and advice a patient needs to develop habits and lifestyle changes that they can carry forward after the program ends.

In some cases, the program is covered by health insurance.

What To Expect From Medically Supervised Weight Loss Programs

Medically supervised weight loss programs start with a full medical evaluation, including the review of blood work. The medical professional will talk to you about your weight loss goals, current eating and lifestyle habits, any medical conditions you have or are at risk of developing, and any medications your currently take.

From there, you’ll work with a nutritionist to develop a healthy eating plan that reduces your calorie consumption. Throughout the program you will meet regularly with your supervising team who will track your weight loss success and monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, sugar levels, and activity levels to see if and how they are impacted by the program.

Medically Directed Weight Loss Programs Provide Long-Lasting Results

Medically supervised weight loss programs provide patients with the education, training, tools, and confidence they need to regain control of their eating and lifestyle habits to create lasting change and achieve weight loss success. This is perhaps the biggest benefit to medically directed weight loss programs.

If you have struggled with weight loss for too long or want to achieve long-lasting weight loss, schedule an evaluation at Wellspring Health today. We can help you reach your weight loss goals!

Massage Therapy Options At Wellspring Health

Massage therapy is a wonderfully effective tool for relaxation and stress reduction, but it is also a highly effective treatment for injury recovery, medical conditions, and chronic pain relief. Wellspring Health offers several different types of massage to ease our clients aches and pains and support healing. A consultation with our Orange City chiropractor is the best way to determine which type of massage will most benefit you, but here’s a quick look at our options.

Massage Therapy Options

  • Swedish Massage. This is the most common and well-known type of massage, perfect for newcomers or those who don’t get massages very often. A Swedish Massage will incorporate many different techniques to provide all-over soft tissue and muscle tension release to support overall health and wellness. Afterwards, you’ll feel refreshed and energized with a reduction in tension-related pain and discomfort.
  • Deep Tissue. A Deep Tissue Massage is slower, more targeted, and more forceful than a Swedish Massage. The intent is to get at the deeper muscles and connective tissues (fascia) to relax and loosen them. It is often used to address chronic aches and pain or for recovery after injuries as it is very effective at breaking up scar tissue and “knots”.
  • Sports Massage. Sports Massages are similar to Swedish Massages in that they both use firm, repetitive strokes to refresh and loosen tight muscles, particularly in areas where muscles, tendons, and joints meet. Sports Massage are used to both heal and prevent injuries in athletes and for that reason may focus only on the area of the body that athlete uses a lot.
  • Prenatal Massage. Prenatal Massage is an excellent way to promote circulation, relieve joint stress, and to relieve pregnancy discomforts like back pain, headaches, leg swelling, or stiff necks. Massages are customized to the mother’s specific needs or discomforts and special cushions and pillows are used to alleviate strain on the lower back and abdomen during the massage.

How Diagnostic Tests Aid Our Orange City Chiropractor

How Diagnostic Tests Aid Our Orange City Chiropractor

Obtaining a full recovery from your injury or ailment starts with getting a proper diagnosis. Sometimes patients come in to Wellspring Health and it’s simple for our Orange City chiropractor to identify the problem and recommend a corrective course of action. But in many other cases, the problem is not so clear-cut. It is at times like this that we rely on in-office diagnostic tools and testing to identify the root cause of a patient’s pain and develop a treatment plan.

In-Office Diagnostic Testing Speeds Recovery

The Complete Wellness Center of Orange City utilizes many different types of diagnostic tests to see into the body and identify conditions and issues that are causing the patient pain or dysfunction. We believe that in-office testing is important – it allows us to obtain a quicker diagnosis which means faster results for our patients.

In-office diagnostic services include:

  • X-rays. In-office x-rays make it possible for our chiropractor to diagnose a condition in minutes. Without this service, we’d have to send patients to an imaging center and then wait for the images to be released to us. That could take days.
  • Nerve Conduction Studies & Electromyography (NCV/EMG). This test is used to diagnose nerve damage or destruction. NCVs and EMGs help us pinpoint the exact nerves that are impinged, eliminating trial and error or guesswork.
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSK US). Ultrasound is invaluable in diagnosing strains, tears, sprains, and other soft tissue injuries. In-office diagnosis makes it possible for us to identify areas of concern and determine the best immediate course of action.
  • Range of Motion (ROM) & Manual Muscle Testing (MMT). These tests digitally and manually measure strength and movement and can be used to assess joint integrity and flexibility.

Overall, in-office diagnostic testing provides our patients with both better care and a higher quality of care. We are able to use tests to diagnosis conditions at the start of treatment to choose the best course of action, but by offering these services in-office, we can also return to them and use them as treatment goes on to gauge progress.
